The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has provided guidance for consumers: IRS Notice 2006-26 .

Tax credits are available for many types of home improvements including replacement windows in Colorado, adding insulation, replacement windows, and certain high efficiency heating and cooling equipment. See chart. The maximum amount of homeowner credit for all improvements combined is $500 during the two year period of the tax credit. This tax credit applies to improvements made to your primary residence from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2007.

Fill out IRS Form 5695 and submit it with your taxes. You need to save your receipts and the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement for your records. A Manufacturer’s Certification Statement is a signed statement from the manufacturer certifying that the product or component qualifies for the tax credit. The IRS encourages manufacturers to provide these Certifications on their website to facilitate identification of qualified products.
